You need the Nikon D700. Good for wide-angle and sealed for outdoor use.
Please note that the 40D, but a very good camera, a camera sensor has been in the APS-C and unsealed. You have to special lenses for wide angle work to buy and pay attention to the environment. You should not use the path of your choice.

Nikon D700 would be perfect for you.
Canon 40D. About half as much as the Nikon D700 has already been reported!
